Chad in short
Chad is among the five largest countries of
Africa.
The recent find of a human
prehistorical fossil has overthrown the human family tree. The
fossil of the discovered skull named “Toumai”, meaning “hope of
life” in the language Gorane, is as ancient as any human fossil
found until today. However, its features look much more human than
former findings it competes with. Not to forget are also the
discoveries of Lucie in the east of the African continent, and more
recent the one of Abel on January 23, 1995. All these discoveries
originate in Chad, which is at the heart of the oldest continent,
Africa.
Situated in central Africa, Chad is bordered by
Libya in the north, by the Republic of Central Africa in the south,
by Sudan in the east, and by Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroun in the
west. With a population of nine million, Chad is a vast country with
a surface of 1.28 million square kilometers, a length of 1700
kilometers, and a width of 1000 kilometers.
Chad gained its independence from its former
colonizer, France, on August 11, 1960. Arabic and French are the
official languages of the country.
